Tomato rice is a very delicious and simple to prepare recipe. Plain steamed rice is cooked with tangy spicy mixture of pureed tomato, onion, coriander leaves and indian spices. Also known as Thakkali Sadam in Tamil, this dish is highly popular in South India.
Tomato Rice
2 cups of soaked basmati rice
4 large tomatoes, chopped
An inch piece of cinnamon
6-7 pieces of cloves
3-4 pieces of cardamom
1½ tsp cumin seeds
6-7 slit green chillies
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
2 small onions, chopped finely
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp red chilli powder
1½ tsp garam masala
1 tsp cumin powder
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves
Method
In an electric blender add 4 large chopped tomatoes and make a puree of it.
In a pressure cooker heat some oil, add an inch piece of cinnamon, 6-7 pieces of cloves, 3-4 pieces of cardamom, 1½ tsp cumin seeds, 6-7 slit green chillies, 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste, 2 chopped onions, salt as required and mix it nicely.
Add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 2 tsp red chilli powder, 1½ tsp garam masala, 1 tsp cumin powder, mix it well.
Add the tomato puree, 2 cups of soaked basmati rice, give it a mix, add 4 cups of water, some coriander leaves, cover it with the lid and cook it for 3 whistles.
Spicy and tangy tomato rice are ready!
