GUA MUSANG, MALAYSIA — A 9-year-old boy and his father are lucky to be alive after falling victim to a savage bear attack while foraging for wood in a Malaysian forest.

At noon on Feb. 8 Usop Ching and his young son, Dee Usop, were out collecting sandalwood. But they were not alone.

A sun bear attacked Dee’s father, slashing his back and the side of his torso. The beast also went after Dee, teeth and claws ripping into the poor child’s face and head, the New Straits Times reported.

Badly wounded, the pair walked for almost an hour until they came to a road, where they were they were found by a plantation worker, who rendered aid.

The shocked man said he had never once seen a bear in all his time in the area.

Young Dee is recovering in the hospital and making a slow recovery.
