Paris builds anti-terrorist glass wall around base of Eiffel Tower

PARIS — Paris plans to build a bulletproof glass wall around the Eiffel Tower that will protect the French capital’s most famous landmark without spoiling the view for visitors.

The 8-foot-high wall will be built around the base of the tower to strengthen security amid fears over terrorism, the Telegraph reported.

The perimeter of the wall includes the base of the tower and two adjacent ponds. Visitors will no longer be able to access the site from nearby Quai Branly or Avenue Gustave-Eiffel. Instead, the entrances will be moved to the tower’s two gardens. All visitors must clear security checkpoints before entering the tower.

“Because the risk and the threat are, unfortunately, here to last, the idea is to make the security setup more durable, but to do it in a way that is aesthetically nicer and more elegant than it is today,” Jean-François Martins, the deputy mayor in charge of tourism told the New York Times.

French authorities believe the Eiffel Tower is a major target for terrorists. The tower was closed for two days in November 2015 after 130 people died in terrorists attacks in Paris.
