The function of the bladder is to collect, store, and release urine. It is part of the urinary system along with the kidneys, the ureters, and the urethra. The kidneys remove waste from the blood in the form of urine. Urine travels through the ureters to the bladder and is emptied from the bladder through the urethra. A bladder infection occurs when bacteria enter the urethra and bladder, causing inflammation and infection. Symptoms may include the frequent need to urinate, as well as pain and burning during urination. A doctor can prescribe medication to effectively treat bladder infections. However, if not diagnosed early, the infection can also spread to the kidneys.
