New reports are advising psoriasis sufferers are at an increased risk of developing potentially serious medical conditions. Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease that causes red, scaly plaques to form on the skin, most often on the joints and scalp. Dr. James Coffey, a Canadian dermatologist stated, “We used to consider psoriasis as just a skin disease. Now we know that inflammation of the skin is the tip of the iceberg." He added that psoriasis patients are more likely to have psoriatic arthritis, or premature inflammation of the heart, gut, liver, and other organs. Psoriasis sufferers are being advised to talk to their doctor about the possible link to other chronic illnesses.
