On Rotten Tomatoes it has a "Certified Fresh" label and holds a 97% "fresh" rating (as of 2015, it is Rotten Tomatoes' second best-reviewed horror film of all time). It was ranked twenty-first in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films of World Cinema".
