Donald Trump Unveils Intentions and Speaks with Chinese President

Chinese President Xi Jinping has spoken with US President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his election victory and reaffirm the importance of relations between the US and China.

He told Trump that cooperation is the ‘only correct choice’ for their countries, as the world’s two biggest economies. Trump responded by expressing his intention to establish a “clear sense of mutual respect”.

The change in tone has come after Trump strongly criticized China during the U.S. election campaign, threatening to slap 45 percent tariffs on all Chinese imports.

There is also speculation about how the leaders will address climate change. Trump may be looking to withdraw from the Paris climate change agreement, which had been a point of mutual cooperation between China and US President Barack Obama.

Following a meeting with Republican leaders, Trump has named his top advisors. He has appointed Republican National Commitee chairman Reince Priebus as his White House chief of staff. Trump has also selected Stephen Bannon, from the conservative Breitbart News Network, as his chief strategist.

Priebus is seen favourably among the Republicans and signals Trumps willingness to work with within the establishment. Bannon, a former Goldman Sachs banker, has been a vocal supporter and served as Trump’s chief of staff.
