1995 WGNT promo for The Richard Bey Show. The talk show traced its roots to its 1987 debut as a local series on Secaucus, NJ (New York area) independent station WWOR-TV 9 called "People Are Talking". The series was later renamed "9 Broadcast Plaza" (at one point between 1989-91; the series was co-hosted by WWOR anchor Sara Lee Kessler and future Today co-host Matt Lauer) before Bey came to the helm, at which point the series was syndicated nationally and took the format that was something of a cross between a standard talk show and a game or variety show.

The series maintained solid ratings but was surprisingly canceled late in 1996 (notably, Bey became convinced pressure from the Clinton White House may have played a role in the series cancellation; as the day before the show was dropped Bey had brought Gennifer Flowers, who had been at the center of the first Bill Clinton sex scandal, as a guest)
