BEIJING — China is reportedly preparing for the launch next year of one of the biggest surface warships seen in Asia since World War II.
The Type 055 destroyer is reportedly up to 180-meters long with a displacement capacity of 12,000 to 14,000 tons, making it bigger than the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Tone class heavy cruisers.
The destroyer is equipped with an electronics support measures mast, which can collect and process enemy electronic activity such as radar, communications and jamming. It also has 112 vertical launch system cells that hold a variety of missiles, Sina reported.
As many as 13 Type 055 destroyers could be built for the cost of one Zumwalt-class destroyer, Chinese state-owned newspaper Ta Kung Pao reported.
