According to the New York Daily News, police have said that around 40 cats were found dead in two freezers--in one, the bodies appeared to be stacked and, in the other, each was wrapped up separately.
A few were even found on trays, and one of these had been skinned.
In addition to the shocking sight, the stench was reportedly so bad that the officers who responded to the scene on Monday evening had to change their clothes after leaving the site.
Police have revealed that the unit had been rented for about two years by an unnamed elderly Brooklyn woman who stopped making payments in July; they have been unable to locate her thus far.
Meanwhile, the ASPCA plans to determine how the cats died, but the animals must be thawed before testing.
