UN calls of a 'massive response' to help battered Haiti

The United Nations has called for a “massive response” to help Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew which struck the impoverished island a week ago.
An appeal has gone out for 119 million dollars to bring life-saving assistance to 750,000 people in Haiti’s south west.
The area is said to be reeling from a direct hit by the deadly storm.
Haiti’s Ambassador to the UN, Pierre-Andre Dunbar has added to the pleas for help:
“The city of Jeremy has been systematically devastated and 80% of the houses were destroyed, crops were also destroyed, the country will face a severe famine as the southwestern peninsula is considered as the bread basket of Haiti.”
Numerous aid organisations are already working in Haiti
each with their own projects, some dating back to the 2010 earthquake:
An estimated 1,000 people died when last week the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade slammed into Haiti.
Cholera since then has also killed at least a dozen people.
The destruction in some areas is complete.
Besides food and medical shortages, materials are needed to build shelters.
While some World Food Programme trucks have arrived, what they are carrying is a drop in the ocean to what is needed .
