Group of 'Nagar Vadhus' (sex workers) performed dance amid music around pyres after offering prayer at the temple of Mahashmashan Nath at Manikarnika Ghat, the main cremation ghat of the city. It is an annual tradition witnessed on the seventh night of Chaitra Navratra. Raja Savai Man Singh of Amber, who had built Man Mandir Ghat in 1585 near Dashshwamedh Ghat, had also renovated the Mahashamshan Nath temple at Manikarnika Ghat. In Hindu tradition, it is common to hold music programme on special occasions. Nagar vadhus offered service at the inauguration of the temple and since then the tradition is on.
