How the pressure cooker bombs used in New York, New Jersey attacks work

NEW YORK — It has now been confirmed that the destructive devices used in the New York terror attacks were pressure cooker bombs.

The pressure cooker bombs used in the attacks were filled with shrapnel and ball bearings, similar to those used in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The explosives in Manhattan are said to have been detonated by a mobile flip phone and Christmas lights. With the materials sealed inside, the trigger ignites inside, with pressure slowly building until the explosion.

The first bomb was placed in a waste disposal unit, which then exploded and injured 29 people. The second bomb was found undetonated, and a robot was sent in to safely remove it from the area.
