Mountain guide Roman Valentini captured one of the largest mountainside collapses ever recorded in Italy’s Dolomite mountains in South Tyrol on August 18. Seven hundred thousand cubic meters of rock and debris fell from a peak known as Piccola Croda Rossa. While the area had been cleared because cracks were observed in the week prior to the avalanche, observers gathered as close as they could to witness the dramatic event. Credit: Roman Valentini
