CNN has apologized for editing a clip of Sherelle Smith, the sister of the man recently fatally shot by a Milwaukee police officer, and mischaracterizing her statement.
In the part broadcast by the network on Monday, Smith says, “Don’t bring the violence here and the ignorance here,” making it seem as if she was asking for an end to the protesting and destruction that began after the shooting.
She was not, which was made clear in the words that followed but did not originally air on CNN.
According to BuzzFeed News, Smith had actually gone on to say, “Burning down sh** ain’t going to help nothing! Y’all burning down sh** we need in our community. Take that sh** to the suburbs. Burn that sh** down! We need our sh**! We need our weaves. I don’t wear it. But we need it.”
