DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — Hundreds of airline passengers escaped a fiery death yesterday when an Emirates jet exploded into flames during a crash-landing in Dubai.

One firefighter, named by Emirates as Jassim Essa Al-Baloushi, was killed fighting the blaze.

Some 282 passengers and 18 crew members fled for the lives after the Boeing 777 skidded on the runway and went up in flames, BBC News reported. At least 13 passengers suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Video footage showed the plane exploding into a ball of fire after coming to a stop on the tarmac. Thick black flames then billowed from the jet.

The majority of those on board were Indian nationals. Video filmed inside the plane by passengers captured terrifying moments of sheer panic.

Passengers said they saw smoke coming out of the cabin as the plane landed, according to the BBC. As fire engulfed the jet, those on board escaped down emergency slides.

The cause of the crash is unknown. A report on the Aviation Week website speculated that the aircraft was making a normal landing but was told by air traffic controllers to start climbing again. The plane then crash-landed, according to the report.
