A major earthquake struck near the Northern Mariana Islands this morning, but poses no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The preliminary 7.7 magnitude quake struck 226 miles north of Saipan at 11:18 a.m. Hawaii time at a depth of 116 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
No desctructive Pacific-wide tsunami was expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
