China has announced a new campaign to try and keep people from stealing bricks from the Great Wall which has been deteriorating at a fast rate.
The Great Wall of China may be around 13,000 miles long, but it is slowly disappearing.
Part of the deterioration has been attributed to environmental erosion, but another contributing factor has been people stealing bricks for home building or “to sell as souvenirs.”
As such the Telegraph is reporting that the China’s State Administration of Cultural Heritage has announced a new campaign “to investigate the conservation situation of the Great Wall in each province.”
This effort will reportedly consist of formal inspections, random checks, and a central number for the public to call about damaged areas.
As a report by The Guardian notes, the government instituted rules to protect the wall about 10 years ago, but they do not seem to have been effective.
