Kiota / The Bird’s Nest

Written and filmed by six girls at the Kiwohede Centre in Iringa. Kiwohede is an organisation that provides education and support for girls who have escaped risky or abusive situations at home.

Kiota is the story of Fatuma, a girl who lives in a rural Tanzanian village and who wants to go to town to become a domestic worker. Her mother forbids her to do this but, encouraged by her friend Jaklin, she runs away from home and begins work as a ‘house girl’. At her new home she finds life much harder than she expected.
