Depression Hits Three Million U.S. Teens Each Year

A new government report shows that in just one year, almost 3 million U.S. teens suffered a major bout of depression. In its report, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that the overall rate of depression among young people also jumped to 11 percent between 2013 and 2014, which is up from 9.9 percent the previous year. Rates of major depressive episodes among young people between the ages of 12 and 17 were highest in Oregon, with an annual average of 14.6 percent. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the District of Columbia had the lowest prevalence of major depressive episodes among teens at 8.7 percent.
