GREECE, NEW YORK — A 45-year-old man is in the hospital after an explosion occurred in his car at a New York gas station.

The unidentified man was caught on surveillance camera at a Sunoco gas station in Greece, New York, standing outside his parked car at the front of the station store.

The man appears to be talking to others outside the store. He then opens the driver’s door and leans in. Seconds later, there’s an explosion from inside the car, covering the man’s upper body in flames. The man rolls away from the car out of frame while the car continues to burn.

Rochester police have not identified the man. They believe he placed a gas can in the trunk of his car. The store owner told Democrat & Chronicle that the man placed the container full of gas inside the car and that he believes spilled. The owner also said he believes the car ignited when the man lit a cigarette.

The man was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with burns to his upper and lower body. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
