A state of emergency was in force in parts of the southern German region of Bavaria on Wednesday night (June 1) after heavy floods caused power outages and chaos.

Some residents in the town of Triftern near the Austrian border were airlifted to safety.

And footage on German television showed locals being rescued from flooded areas by police helicopters.

German news agency DPA reported that about 50 children were set to spend the night in their school’s gymnasium.

Separately, the Bavarian broadcasting service reported three people were killed in the floods. A police statement said divers recovered three bodies from a house in the town of Simbach.

Wide parts of the country have seen storms and heavy rain since the weekend.
