Man, 64, gets a brand new johnson in successful first U.S. penis transplant

BOSTON — The first penis transplant in the United States was completed successfully earlier this month.

Thomas Manning, 64, from Halifax, Massachusetts, was the recipient of the new organ, according to a news release by the Massachusetts General Hospital published on Monday.

Manning developed penile cancer after a work accident in 2012. In order to save his life, doctors had to remove most of his penis.

He received a new organ from a deceased donor during a 15-hour operation on May 8 and May 9, according to the hospital. The operation was successful and doctors expect Manning to resume normal urination and sexual function in the near future.

"These proof-of-principle cases will help establish the techniques used in this procedure and will forge the path to future treatment of patients with significant pelvic and genitourinary tissue loss related to cancer, trauma or infection," said Dicken S.C. Ko, a urologist and transplant surgeon at the hospital.

"We are delighted to have taken the first steps to help those patients who have suffered silently for far too long."

Some 2,030 new penile cancer cases and 340 deaths from the disease are expected in the U.S. this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

Only two full penis transplants have ever been reported: one failed attempt in China in 2006 and a successful operation in South Africa in 2014, the Atlantic reported.
