A camera on the back of the device sends images over a WiFi connection which are then matched searched against an online database.
When it finds a match, the device displays the name of the object while a speaker on the back of the device can say the name.
The team behind the technology say it can also identify scenes, such as a woman sitting behind a desk and produce an accurate description of this.
They say it may help children learn about the world around them when their parents are too busy or not available.
However, similar technology could also be employed as a wearable device for the visually impaired, allowing them to identify objects with the help of the camera.
