Magical 'second skin' could get rid of wrinkles and eyebags forever

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — An invisible "second skin" can reduce wrinkles and could be used to treat skin diseases, a study by U.S. researchers says.

The scientists behind the study said the film is made of everyday chemicals deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration, and none of 170 subjects who took part in trials has shown an allergic reaction to it, the New York Times reported.

The research was published in the journal Nature Materials on Monday.

MIT and Harvard scientists report the film can remove wrinkles and bags under eyes.

The chemicals used in the second skin are one-part oxygen atom linked to two-parts silicon atoms. Longer chains of the molecular structure, known as polymers, can be modified to produce different properties, the New York Times reported.

For example, the film can be made more or less permeable, depending on its intended application.

Researchers believe the film will be able to treat conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, by moistening and soothing dry, itchy skin, the New York Times reported. They also say the film can be used to hold medication in place, such as cortisone creams used to treat skin diseases.

The second skin can be removed with a solution that dissolves the polymer, the New York Times reported.

The researchers said they are unsure when they would be able to seek FDA approval for the second skin but hoped to know more later this year, according to the New York Times.
