Putin threatens to throw spaceport workers in jail after rocket launch is cancelled

MOSCOW — Russian president Vladimir Putin has warned he will arrest workers at the new Vostochny cosmodrome after he flew thousands of miles to watch the inaugural rocket launch, which was cancelled just minutes before the planned lift-off on Wednesday.

An unmanned Soyuz-2.1A rocket carrying three satellites was supposed to be launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome, located in the Amur Region near China's border, on Wednesday. Staff at the cosmodrome called off the launch after discovering a glitch on the rocket system.
The delay upset Putin, who criticized the Russian space industry at a meeting with the country's top space officials on Wednesday and was quoted saying: "The fact is there is a large number of hitches. That is bad. There should be an appropriate reaction."
The second attempt of the launch was completed successfully on Thursday. Putin then congratulated the spaceport workers and called the previous failed attempt "a normal thing", Reuters reported.

The Vostochny cosmodrome is designed to replace the Baikonur cosmodrome, which is leased by the Kazakh government to Russia. However, the new facility has been mired in scandals, with four people arrested for corruption and several others under criminal investigation.
