Was the Saudi government involved in the 9/11 attacks? New evidence suggests it may have been

WASHINGTON — In the same week in which US President Barack Obama visited Saudi Arabia amid a thaw in relations between the two longtime allies, new evidence has emerged possibly implicating the Saudi government in the September 11 attacks.

A report by the New York Post, citing leaked details of the 28 pages redacted from the Congressional investigation into the 9/11 attacks claims to provide concrete proof of Saudi involvement in the terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

Among the claims is that the San Diego-based Saudi handler of one of the hijackers made multiple calls to the Saudi Embassy ahead of the attacks.

Some $130,000 is also alleged to have been transferred from the family checking account of then-Saudi Ambassador Prince Bandar bin Sultan to a different Saudi handler of one of the terrorists.

Additional evidence of Saudi links to the attacks came recently courtesy of blogger Brian McGlinchey who analyzed documents on counter-terrorism investigations conducted by the FBI, according to the Telegraph.

The flight certificate of an Al-Qaeda bomb-maker who took flying lessons with some of the 9/11 hijackers was allegedly hidden inside an official Saudi Embassy envelope.

Allegations of Saudi-involvement in terrorist plots go further still. Former Al Qaeda operative Zacarias Moussaoui in late 2014, testifying as part of a lawsuit by relatives of those killed in the 9/11 attacks against Saudi Arabia, claimed that the terrorist group counted members of the Saudi royal family, including Prince Bandar, among its major donors, according to a New York Times report.

Moussaoui also claimed to have discussed a plan to use Stinger missiles to attack Air Force One and assassinate then President Bill Clinton, with a Saudi embassy official in the US capital, according to CNN.

Saudi officials early last year issued vehement denials, calling Moussaoui, who had previously been diagnosed with a mental illness, but was cleared to stand trial, a "deranged criminal whose own lawyers presented evidence that he was mentally incompetent," according to the Times.

President Obama recently suggested his administration may soon declassify the contentious 28 pages, a move that will no doubt shed light on the alleged involvement of the Saudi government in the attacks.
