Man fighting cancer shot, killed while rescuing wife during attempted robbery

PLANT CITY, FLORIDA — A 67-year-old man battling cancer was shot and killed as he tried to protect his wife during a robbery attempt last Friday night.
Michael Beson, who was been diagnosed with cancer, was preparing to have surgery this month. All he wanted was more time to spend with his wife and children.
His daughter Raquel Beson told the Tampa Bay Times that in a recent conversation, “He said, ‘I just want five more years.’ He was fighting for his life and had the will to live.”
However, Beson was fatally shot Friday during a robbery attempt at a Plant City gas station.
On Sunday, police arrested Xavier Quesean Smith, 19, and charged him with first-degree murder.
Beson was filling up his vehicle at a Mobil gas station when Smith tried to snatch Beson’s wife’s purse.
Smith fatally shot Beson after he tried to intervene, according to authorities.
The 19-year-old fled the scene after the shooting, but was tracked down two days later by police. Smith had a stolen gun and was wanted for violating his probation, police said.
Beson and his wife would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary later this month, according to MLive.
Smith was charged with first-degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm in public.
