Texas teen is 10th U.S. victim of Takata's deadly exploding air bags

WASHINGTON — The death of a teenaged Texas driver last week is the 10th linked to defective Takata air bags in the United States, regulators and automaker Honda confirmed on Wednesday.

Exploding Takata air bags have prompted the recall of tens of millions of vehicles worldwide, Reuters reported.

The latest U.S. victim was 17-year-old Huma Hanif, who died on March 31 when her 2002 Honda Civic rear-ended a Honda CR-V in Fort Bend County.

High school senior Hanif was not speeding and was wearing a seatbelt during the crash, so she should have walked away alive, investigators told Reuters. However, she was killed when shrapnel punctured her air bag and sliced through an artery in her neck.

The use of ammonium nitrate as a propellant is one of three factors that cause Takata air bags to explode, according to the Independent Testing Coalition, which is made up of 10 automakers, Autoblog reported.

The Independent Testing Coalition found that Takata's inflators don't keep out moisture in high-humidity environments, according to Autoblog. High humidity then causes the already moist air bags to explode with too much force, spraying shrapnel at drivers and passengers.

So far, 14 automakers have recalled 24 million vehicles over the faulty air bags in the largest auto recall in U.S. history, Reuters reported.

Nine of the U.S. deaths linked to Takata air bags occurred in Honda vehicles. More than 100 people have been injured by the air bags, according to several reports. Honda said the owner of Hanif's car had been mailed multiple recall notices, but repairs were never made, according to Reuters.
