American tourist killed, several others wounded in Israel stabbing attack

JAFFA, ISRAEL — An American tourist has been killed and several people were wounded in a stabbing attack that targeted Israelis near Tel Aviv and in Jerusalem.

The American was one of 10 that were stabbed in Jaffa, south of Tel Aviv. Police say the attacker, a 21-year-old Palestinian, stabbed a number of people along a popular oceanfront boardwalk, then moved through the city to attack others.

U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden was at an event nearby at the time.

Police say the attacker was from the West Bank town of Qalqilya and was shot dead at the scene.

The attack followed two others on the same day, also carried out by Palestinian men.

Earlier, two Israeli police officers were shot and wounded in occupied East Jerusalem. Outside the Old City's Damascus Gate, a gunman opened fire on a group of police officers, seriously wounding one. The suspect was chased and wounded another, but was then shot and killed, according to police.

In another attack, an ultra-Orthodox Jew was stabbed in Petah Tikva, near Tel Aviv. Witnesses in the suburb of Petah Tikva claim a Palestinian attacker stabbed the ultra-Orthodox Jew, but the victim fought back, pulling the knife out of his neck and killing the attacker with his own knife. The wounded man had been collecting money for charity at the time and was rushed to hospital to be treated for wounds to his upper body.

Since October, Palestinian stabbings, shootings and car rammings have killed 28 Israelis and two Americans.
