I Got 5 on It is a hip hop song by hip hop duo Luniz, taken from their album Operation Stackola. It features vocal contributions from R&B singer Michael Marshall. The song has become their most famous to date, and helped make Operation Stackola their best-selling album.\r
I got 5 on it is a phrase meaning to pay half for a dime bag (a 10-dollar bag of marijuana) with another person. The lyrics in the original song clearly convey this meaning.\r
Kinda broke so ya know all I gots five, I got five\r
Unless you pull out the fat, crispy five dollar bill on the real before its history\r
I got 5 on it, lets go half on a sack\r
The remix to the song, which can be found on the CD single known as the Bay Ballas Remix, featured an extensive list of artists from the Bay Area including original collaborator Michael Marshall on the chorus, Dru Down, E-40, Richie Rich, Shock G, and Spice 1. Later remixes attempt to modify the original meaning. In Dru Downs verse he states the 5 can refer to either $500 or a Mercedes-Benz 500E for the particularly wealthy, while Numskull suggests the practice can also be used to assist in paying for alcoholic beverages such as Hennessy, Seagrams or 40s.\r
The song samples Club Nouveaus Why You Treat Me So Bad (1987), Kool and the Gangs Jungle Boogie (1973) and Audio Twos Top Billin (1987). There have also been several unofficial Drum n Bass remixes of this track.\r
In 2000, Yukmouth appeared on a sequel titled Gz On It with Mac Mall and Fed-X on Killa Tays album Snake Eyes\r
In 2011, also a Dutch rapper named Hef used this instrumental beat for his freestyle on a radio called 101 Barz\r
The single reached #2 in Germany, #3 in the United Kingdom and #8 in the United States. The single was certified platinum by the RIAA on October 31, 1995 for shipping of one million copies.\r
Hailing from the San Francisco bay area, the song is still very popular in that region. Adding to this popularity is the fact that the popular morning radio show, The Rise Guys (featuring Whitey Gleason, Mark Kreidler & Dan Dibley with Dave Deuce Mason as producer) on KGMZ 95.7FM The Game, has a recurring segment on Fridays called The Friday Five that uses I Got 5 on It as the theme song. The song plays on a loop in the back ground, featuring prominently the words, I Got 5 on It. As part of The Friday Five there is a main sports topic driving each individual list. Then each host takes a turn doing one of the lists (starting with five options, then four, then three and so on down to one). Each list is usually littered with sports and pop culture references. Hilarity usually ensues.\r
The instrumentals for I Got 5 on It are used for the song Satisfy You by Puff Daddy featuring R. Kelly, Luniz is featured in the official West Coast Remix of the song. The song has also been freestyled by many notable rappers such as: Lloyd Banks, Lil Flip, Potluck and many others. Turkish rapper Emre Baransel used the instrumental on the song Ver 5i (Classical Mixtape) which features Sahtiyan and Turkish rap star Ceza. The remix of this song was covered by Twiztid on their Mans Myth (Vol. 1) album. This version was titled Bonus Flavor and also featured Insane Clown Posse, Blaze Ya Dead Homie, Anybody Killa, Esham and Lavel. The instrumental was sampled for the official remix of R&B singer J. Holidays single, Bed, that features rappers Trina and Ja Rule. The instrumental was also sampled by Jennifer Lopez for her record Im Gonna Be Alright featuring Nas. Big Sean also used the beat for his version of the song called 5 Bucks (5 on It) featuring Chip tha Ripper and Curren$y on his mixtape Finally Famous Volume 3: BIG.
