Plane crashes in Nepal mid-way through 18-minute flight, 23 dead

MYAGDI DISTRICT, NEPAL — Rescue teams in Nepal found the wreckage of a small plane carrying 23 people — including two infants — that crashed into a mountain in bad weather on Feb 24.

The Twin Otter aircraft, operated by private Tara Air, was on a flight from Pokhara, 125 km (80 miles) west of the capital, Kathmandu, to Jomsom when it lost contact with the control tower.

All those aboard were confirmed dead.

Helicopters searched the mountainous route for hours after the plane was reported missing, but were hampered by bad weather conditions. Searchers were able to locate the wreckage after residents of Rupshe, a small village, reported having heard a loud explosion.
"It has broken into pieces," police officer Bishwaraj Khadka told Reuters. "There are no survivors." A Chinese national and a Kuwaiti citizen were among the dead.

The aircraft, which was scheduled for an 18-minute flight, was found in the western district of Myagdi, Civil Aviation Minister Aananda Prasad Pokharel told AFP.
"The wreckage of the plane was found in a completely burnt state in Solighopte in Myagdi district," Pokharel said. "The team there say that the bodies are scattered and it is not possible to identify anyone right now."

Police official Harihari Yogi said, upon discovery, the wreckage of the plane was still burning, all the bodies were charred and that the aircraft appeared to have flown directly into the mountain.
Officials said thick fog had enveloped the Mustang area where Jomsom is located. Mustang is a popular hiking area on the Mount Annapurna trekking circuit. A similar aircraft crashed in west Nepal in 2014, killing 18 people.
