Woman charged for failing to save daughter from burning home

MIAMI — A mother was arrested and charged after Miami-Dade firefighters rescued her 6-year-old daughter alone in a burning apartment on Thursday, Feb. 18.
Erica Rosello, 32, was charged with child neglect with great bodily harm early Friday for failing to help save her daughter. The fire started just before 8 p.m. in the kitchen of their home at the Versailles Gardens Condominiums at Flagler Street and 94th Avenue, in Miami.

According to police, a witness said he saw Rosello in the hallway of the complex and smoke coming from her apartment. Rosello denied there was a fire, but admitted her daughter was inside. Police also said that neighbors told them Rosello was outside when the fire broke out, and made no attempt to save her 6-year-old daughter, who was screaming for help.

Neighbors called for help. Firefighters found a little girl trapped inside unit 104 on the first floor. She was taken to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
"The bed was literally two feet from the window and I happened to see the little girl," Miami-Dade Firefighter David Arrencibia told CBS 4 News. Arrencibia, a paramedic with the fire department, rescued the child by smashing the bedroom window. "I could tell she was unconscious," he told CBS 4 News. "I was picking her up, turning around and taking her out the window."
Investigators said that when firefighters tended to the child, Rosello fled the scene. The child was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Crews were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to neighboring units.

Rosello later called her mother, Angelica Tabio, to check on her daughter. The woman convinced Rosello to come to the hospital and cooperate with investigators. Police arrested Rosello when she arrived at the hospital. She was charged Friday morning and is not allowed contact with the child, who is in Tabio's custody.
Rosello's daughter was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation and is expected to recover.
The cause of the fire remains unclear.
