Teacher guns down seven colleagues in Saudi Arabian shooting rampage

JAZAN, SAUDI ARABIA — A Saudi Arabian teacher opened fire on colleagues at a government office in the kingdom's south on Thursday, killing and injuring 10 people,
the Saudi Gazette reports.

The shooting occurred at an education department office in Saudi Arabia's southern Jazan province, just several kilometers from the border with Yemen."

Armed with an AK-47, the attacker opened fire at around 2 p.m. local time and killed seven employees and wounded three, Saudi Interior Ministry spokesman General Mansour Turki said. The three injured are said to be in a critical condition at Dayer General Hospital the Gazette reports.

According to the Saudi Gazette, local sources told Okaz, a local newspaper, that the suspect was 30-year-old Abdullah Jaber Al-Malki, a teacher in Islamic Education who was given the 'Ideal Teacher' award. Al-Malki reportedly stormed the office with a Kalashnikov.

Mass shootings are rare in Saudi Arabia, however as of late, the kingdom has recently come under attack by the so-called Islamic State militants, reported Reuters.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a coalition of countries conducting airstrikes and ground operations in the neighboring Yemen since late March last year, reported BBC.

General Mansour Turki have stated the suspect has been arrested. No motive has been given for the attack.
