HAMILTON, ALABAMA — A shooting spree in a small Alabama city on Wednesday ended when a bystander reportedly borrowed another person's gun and shot the gunman, injuring him.
The first shooting on Wednesday morning happened at a law firm in Hamilton, Alabama where suspect Jimmy Cooper opened fire on Donny Miller, reported ABC 33/40.
Cooper then walked two blocks to an accounting firm, where he tried to get in through the back door. However, this entrance was locked. He told employees at the front desk that he was wanted in the back, so they let him in. According to NBC News affiliate WTVA, Cooper's then said to have gone to the rear of the building where he shot and killed 61-year-old Linda Cole.
Bystanders inside and outside the building scrambled to retrieve weapons from their vehicles. Running into an armed bystander in a nearby alley, Cooper reportedly shot at him 15 times. The bystander, who told WTVA that he borrowed his weapon from another, says he took cover before returning fire twice and hitting Cooper.
When police arrived, officers also reportedly fired more shots at Cooper before he was apprehended and taken into custody. According to WTVA, one law enforcement officer fired at Cooper through the windshield of his SUV.
It's unclear what Cooper's motive for the shootings was, although the victims appear to have been targeted. Miller was Cooper's one-time business partner and Cooper had been a client of Cole's, reported NBC-affiliate WVTM 13.
