LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles-area Air Force veteran has been scarred for life after his e-cigarette allegedly malfunctioned and literally blew up in his face, according to a report by KTLA.
Soon after waking up on January 3, Donald George noticed a problem with his e-cigarette; after he had replaced the battery, it'd stopped working.
The 34-year-old next put the device up to his ear to test it and pressed down on the activation button three times. That's when it allegedly blew up, spewing flames in his face before burning his shoulder.
"I hit it about three times and then boom, it exploded in my hand and then flames came shooting out the bottom," Donald George told KTLA.
George, who's currently an air-traffic controller while working towards an MBA, is now suing the Lancaster, California store that sold him the defective e-cigarette.
There were 25 reported e-cigarette-related fires and explosions between 2009 and 2014 in the US alone, according to a Denver Post report citing the U.S. Fire Administration. The vast majority of such accidents happened while the device's battery was being charged.
