COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — Denmark's parliament on Tuesday voted in favor of a controversial measures that allow authorities to confiscate valuables from asylum seekers to help pay for their stay in the country.

According to the Danish immigration ministry, items that can be confiscated include cash, watches, mobile phones and computers, although items of sentimental value such as wedding and engagement rings, family portraits, awards and medals are exempt.

The bill also tripled the amount of time before migrants can apply for their families to join them in Denmark from one year to three.
