NEW YORK — A man who forced his girlfriend to walk naked down a New York street after he allegedly caught her sexting other men was arrested on Wednesday.
Jason Melo, 24, was branded a "self-pitying misogynist maniac" by the New York Daily News after video of the incident went viral.
The clip shows Melo making his 22-year-old girlfriend walk down the street in Harlem wearing nothing but a pair of boots, while he curses her in Spanish.
But Melo, who worked as a caterer at the U.N., turned himself in to police on Wednesday amid a huge online backlash, the New York Daily News reported.
The whole sorry tale began on Sunday, when Melo's girlfriend was home at their West 142nd Street apartment with the couple's 2-month-old daughter.
Earlier reports erroneously referred to the woman as Melo's wife.
According to what Melo says in the video clip, he came home to catch his girlfriend chatting to seven other men.
Melo punched the victim in the face and crotch and choked her, before threatening to kill her if she didn't take her clothes off and subject herself to his barbaric punishment, the New York Daily News reported.
Wearing only a towel and pair of boots, Melo forced the victim to go out onto the street in subzero temperatures.
Melo posted the clip to his Instagram account but later removed it. However, at first he appeared to be unrepentant as he partied with friends in a video posted to Instagram.
But Melo soon changed his tune after he received a barrage of online abuse for his actions, later apologizing and posting a video of himself crying as he expressed his regret over the incident.
Melo now faces charges of choking, endangering the welfare of a child, coercion, and assault. He is due back in court on Feb. 10.
The victim was treated for facial injuries, according to the New York Daily News.
