Three robbers try to attack off duty police officer, then one gets shot in the chest

NEW YORK — An off duty police officer opened fire at a man after the an attempted mugging took place early Monday morning.
The incident took place near Creston Avenue and E. 179 Street in Mount Hope just before 4 a.m., according to local news reports.
According to AM New York, three assailants approached the officer in an attempt to rob him. One man who was armed with a gun was wearing a red jacket, while another attacker was wearing a black jacket and armed with two knives.
The officer responded by shooting one of the suspects in the torso, police said.
The man who was shot was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
The other two suspects fled the scene on foot, and are still at large, according to police.
