Taiwan elects opposition leader Tsai Ing-wen as first female president

TAIPEI — It was a landslide victory for pro-independence opposition candidate Tsai Ing-wen, who made history as the first female president of the Republic of China.

Focus Taiwan reports that over 18 million Taiwanese voters from 22 cities and counties went to polls on Saturday to elect a new president and legislature.

In stark contrast to 2012, when the Nationalist Kuomintang party led the polls, more people voted for the Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, in 2016.

Tsai Ing-wen won by a landslide, securing more than half of the total votes and defeating KMT candidate Eric Chu.

According to Reuters, the DPP also won a majority in parliament, taking 68 of the 113 seats in the Legislative Yuan.

Reacting to the victory, the Mainland emphasized that there is only one China. And though Tsai has pledged to maintain peace with Beijing, she likewise underscored Taiwan's commitment to democracy.

Viewed as a pragmatic leader, Tsai will have her hands full balancing the interests of China, the U.S., and Taiwan's 23 million residents.
