Nutritional Management - Managing Blood Pressure with a Heart-Healthy Diet - English

The traditional yogic diet is lacto-vegetarian. It is based on whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and free of animal products except for milk, yogurt and cheeses. Regular practitioners are also taught to abstain from alcohol, coffee and cigarettes and to avoid any substances which are addictive or harmful. These rules are very similar to the recommendations of the American Heart Association. According to the "AHA Nutrition Center," to maintain good cardiovascular health, adults should eat at least four and a half cups of fresh fruits and vegetables per day, at least three servings of whole grains daily, a minimum of four servings of nuts and/or legumes each week, and limit sodium consumption to less than 1,500 mg daily, and processed meats to less than two servings per week. It also recommends avoiding smoking and limiting sugary foods as much as possible. The yogic diet meets all these criteria and adds a few more healthy guidelines such as avoiding alcohol and caffeine.
