Apple has finally jumped into the wearables game. On Tuesday, it unveiled the Apple Watch, it's long-rumored smartwatch, in two different sizes.
The Apple Watch also features:
•A wireless charger that clips to the back of the watch magnetically.
•A sapphire crystal display, the same extremely hard material used for the iPhone's camera.
•A "digital crown" on the side of the watch to scroll through items, zoom and return to the home screen.
•A wide range of bands and finishes, including an 18-karat gold edition.
•A heart-rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope and the ability to send vibrations to your friends by touching your Apple Watch.
•Turn-by-turn directions that lets users know which direction to go by vibrating in a certain way.
The Apple Watch still relies on the iPhone to operate, which means it can't be used on its own, much like smartwatches from competitors like Samsung and LG. The watch, which will go on sale "early next year" for $349, requires an iPhone 5 or higher.
Apple may not be first into the smartwatch space, but the Apple Watch does bring with it a new way of interacting. Whereas other platforms, like Android Wear, have focused on touch, Apple has looked instead to physical controls, borrowing the physical dial from traditional timepieces, and throwing in a newly perceptive touchscreen.
"It turns out, with every revolutionary product that Apple has created, a breakthrough in user-interface was required," Tim Cook said during the presentation. "With the Mac, we introduced the mouse. The click wheel on the iPod. And with iPhone, multitouch gave us the ability to interact with a beautiful canvas of photos, or video, or music."
"The Apple Watch required the same kind of careful, deliberate deliberation. What we didn’t do is take the iPhone, and shrink the interface, and strap it on your wrist," Cook explained. "The display is too small, it would be a terrible interface. For instance, with pinch-to-zoom, it covers the view! So, we placed extra functionality on a mechanism that has been on the watch for decades. It’s this dial, it’s called a crown. On Apple Watch it’s called a digital crown.”

So, pressing the sensor-packed crown in takes the Apple Watch back to the home page. Turning it navigates through the interface of whatever app is dominant on the screen at the time.
For instance, in the Apple Maps app, turning the digital crown controls zooming. There's also touch control, of course, tapping and stroking the sapphire crystal display.

The button below the digital crown, meanwhile, shows a friend page of contacts which works as a shortcut to other people.

The touchscreen, too, is new, with electrodes around the display that can tell the difference between a tap and a press. That allows the Apple Watch to handle different presses separately.
Apple Watch makes its official debut with squarish touch screen, Digital Crown
The rumors surrounding Apple’s wearable have been flowing for most of 2014, but today they can finally come to an end, because the Apple Watch is official.

Yep, that’s it’s name: Apple Watch. The device will be available in two sizes and Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport or Apple Watch Edition (gold) variants. Users will also be able to select from a variety of bands, including leather and metal options.

The Apple Watch features a flexible Retina touch display that’s laminated to sapphire crystal. It’s also got a Digital Crown on its side that lets users magnify content on the display, scroll through lists and make selections.

On the software side of things, the Apple Watch will run apps from Apple and third parties. Users can swipe up from the bottom of the display to activate Glances, which will show different apps like music controls, location and weather info that can be swiped through horizontally. You can also receive notifications from apps, and when you do, you’ll get a “tactic” alert from your watch. You can then lift your wrist to view the notification.

Notifications can be acted on when you view them. For example, you can accept or decline calendar invitations and respond to messages. When you want to send a message, Apple will offer several pre-written responses. You can dictate a message using your voice or respond with emojis as well.

Apple also made note of its two fitness-focused apps, known as Fitness and Workout. Fitness will track your general movement and activity, while Workout will allow you to set goals for specific activities like biking or running.
