Axe wielding university student shot dead by cop on his 21st birthday

DENTON, TEXAS — The Texas Rangers are investigating the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old University of North Texas student by a campus police officer. Police say Ryan McMillan was smashing car windows with an axe around 1 a.m. Sunday morning before approaching a UNT police officer, who opened fire. The Forth Worth Star-Telegram spoke to McMillan's former roommate, who said he might have been out Saturday night celebrating his 21st birthday and may have been intoxicated. But she wasn't there herself. How that celebration transitioned into the mayhem that followed isn't yet known to police, but just after 12:30 a.m., McMillan was captured on cellphone camera walking through the underground parking lot of the U Center carrying what witnesses say was an axe. Inside the parking lot, he is alleged to have smashed the windows of at least seven cars with the axe, prompting the first 911 call to Denton police. Since the report of "criminal mischief" was close to the the university, UNT police offered to respond instead. Then, near the busy bar area on Fry Street, a UNT officer encountered McMillan, who the officer said approached him with the axe. The officer fired at McMillan four times according to witnesses. He was pronounced dead at 1:33 a.m. Residents of the nearby area were shocked by the sudden outburst of violence, with some heckling officers at the scene. The officer involved will go on administrative leave, and the Texas Rangers have taken over investigating the shooting.
