Arson attack at California mosque feared to result from anti-Muslim backlash

COACHELLA, CALIFORNIA — Investigators have confirmed arson was the cause of a fire at a Riverside County mosque, believing it may have been targeted for religious reasons.

The New York Times reports that a fire broke out at the Islamic Society of Coachella Valley in California just before afternoon prayers on Friday.

Worshippers inside the mosque at the time described hearing a loud explosion shortly after noon. A blaze soon erupted in the lobby and front doorway of the mosque, causing smoke damage to the building, but fortunately no injuries.

Firefighters responded to the scene and put out the flames some 35 minutes later, according to Reuters.

The fire raises concerns of an anti-Muslim backlash following the December 2 shootings at San Bernardino, which is located some 75 miles away from the mosque.

Last year, shots were fired at the same mosque, an incident that was investigated as a possible hate crime, reports the Los Angeles Times.
