Navy two-star admiral fired after drunk and naked romp at Florida convention
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA — On Monday the U.S. Navy announced that a two-star admiral had been fired in October for doing basically what everyone who goes to Florida is there to do, getting drunk and running around naked.
The Navy Times reports that 56-year-old Rear Admiral David F. Baucom had been in the Navy for 34 years and was director of Strategy, Policy, Capabilities and Logistics at U.S. Transportation Command. He was attending the National Defense Transportation Association's Transportation Advisory Board, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and apparently refreshments were served.
According to the Navy's extremely thorough report, seen by Navy Times, Baucom had a gin and tonic and two glasses of wine with dinner. Then he went to a bar and had one scotch, then four scotches at the next bar. After insisting that he wasn't going back to the hotel yet, security camera footage shows him stumbling and hitting his head on a bar stool, according to the report.
At 1:30 a.m. a hotel employee drove him home because he couldn't walk and put him back in his room. Once inside, Baucom took off all his clothes, as you do. It's then that Baucom says he took his prescription medications, which cause drowsiness in combination with alcohol. Yet he woke up at 5 a.m. and tried to go to the bathroom.
Except the door he thought was his bathroom door was actually the door to the hallway. At 5:45 a.m. he was observed walking around naked and still looking for a towel. Eventually one of Baucom's colleagues found him and let him back into his room, Navy Times says.
In a statement Baucom asked that his 34 years in the Navy not be judged by a single incident and he believes his prescriptions combined with the alcohol gave him a condition called an arrhythmia. But the Navy determined that Baucom's public nudity had already disgraced him as an officer and he was fired.
So, now that his career is over I guess he'll just have to live with the shame and the millions of dollars he could potentially make as a lobbyist for defense contractors.
