London Underground stabbing suspect had ISIS-related photos on his cellphone

LONDON — The man who slashed a 56-year-old man inside a London subway station over the weekend proclaimed that his motive was ISIS-related after he shouted "This is for Syria" during the attack, but that connection with the extremist group has become even stronger after British authorities discovered ISIS-related photos on the man's phone.

Muhyadin Mire approached his victim in the Leytonstone underground station at around 7 p.m. on Saturday and reportedly "sawed" at the man's neck with a boxcutter-style blade before threatening other passersby. Cell phone footage of the incident shows responding police officers using stun guns to subdue Mire before pinning him to the ground and handcuffing him.

When British authorities searched the 29-year-old's phone after the attack, he clearly had either an affinity for the macabre or an extremely strong interest in ISIS.

According to ABC News, authorities found photos from last month's Paris terrorist attacks and from last week's massacre at a social services agency in San Bernardino, California. While not exactly claiming credit for it, ISIS has applauded the San Bernardino incident, which left 14 dead after a husband and wife duo opened fire on government agency employees.

The UK's Westminster Magistrates' Court identified other images related to ISIS in Mire's phone, including images of ISIS prisoners as well as images from a British police exercise involving an active shooter scenario, reported ABC News.

A search of Mire's phone's web history indicated that the Somali-born Londoner had previously searched for information about the Islamic State and knife attacks carried out by Palestinians.

Scotland Yard is treating Saturday's knife attack as a terrorist incident, and the court has deemed Mire a danger to the public, due to his apparent mental health issues. He has been charged with one count of attempted murder.
