Hostage killed by police after hours-long standoff in Wisconsin motorcycle shop

NEENAH, WISCONSIN — An hours-long hostage situation at a motorcycle shop in Wisconsin on Saturday morning ended with the arrest of the gunman and the fatal shooting of one hostage as he tried to flee the scene.

A disgruntled customer took several hostages at Eagle Nation Cycles in Neenah, Wisconsin at around 9 a.m. on Saturday and reportedly fired one shot into the ceiling.

After hearing the single gunshot from the basement of his store, Steven Erato called his friend Michael Funk, who was working in the store that day. Funk gave Erato the go-ahead to call 911, reported the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.

When the authorities entered the store to rescue the hostages, one officer was shot in the helmet and injured. It isn't clear who shot the officer. A bullet also struck a fire extinguisher inside the store, filling the room with smoke, according to the Journal Sentinel

As Funk later fled the store with a gun in the midst of the standoff, police fatally shot him when he ignored demands to drop his weapon, reported WBAY.

The Journal Sentinel quoted a friend of Funk's as saying that he has been terrified of the police since a 2012 police raid of the store. At the time, Funk had told officers he was carrying a lawfully concealed weapon, but the 60-year-old was pinned to the ground as other officers reportedly pointed guns at his head.

Funk's attorney is in an ongoing federal lawsuit against the city of Neenah and its police department over the 2012 raid, and told the Journal Sentinel that Funk, a Vietnam War veteran, suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and was probably "terrified" during Saturday's standoff.

Eventually, the other hostages were all released after negotiations, and the gunman was taken into custody. According to the Journal Sentinel, the gunman apparently wanted a motorcycle back after selling it to its current owner.
