Popullsia e Shqipërisë ne vitin 2011 ka pësuar një rënie me 7.7% krahasuar me 10 vjet me pare. Pas një pune me shume se njëmujore ne terren, Instituti i Statistikave publikoi te dhënat paraprake te censusit, ku rezulton se numri i popullsie është 2 milion e 831 mije banore. Ne regjistrimin e fundit te kryer ne vitin 2001 kjo shifër ishte 3 milion banore. Tkurrja e popullsisë lidhet me nivelin e larte te emigrimit, por edhe me uljen e lindshmërisë. Një tjetër element qe konstatohet për here te pare është se pjesa me e madhe e popullsisë jeton ne qytet dhe me pak ne fshat. Duke iu referuar 12 prefekturave, ne 10 prej tyre ka një reduktim te ndjeshëm te qytetareve, krahasuar me vitin 2001. Vetëm Tirana dhe Durrësi ka pësuar rritje. Nga te dhënat e censusit rezulton se kemi me shume femra se meshkuj. Ne regjistrimet e mëparshme ajo qe vërehej ishte dominimi i meshkujve ne popullsi. Ndërsa ne censusin e fundit ky trend, për arsye ende te pastudiuara, ka ndryshuar.
