Mexico No. 1 in Teen Pregnancies in the Americas

Mexico has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in the Western Hemisphere. Reproductive rights activists attribute the phenomenon to a combination of social stigma, sexual crimes and rape -which account for 40% of the total- and inadequate government policies. On average, 1,250 children are born to teenage mothers daily. The problem is particularly acute among girls from 10 to 14 years of age. The UN Population Fund is working in indigenous, Afro-descendant, and impoverished communities to reduce teen pregnancies. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City. teleSUR
