Man dies after taking joyride down steep hill in shopping cart

SYDNEY — For 28-year-old Robin Wahlgren, a midnight thrill rolling down a hill turned out to be a disaster following a shopping cart joyride that proved fatal.
Wahlgren was hosting one of his friends from Sweden for the week in Sydney. The two Swedish men were walking home after a night out when they stumbled upon a shopping cart parked on the side of the road. Wahlgren got into the cart, while his buddy hopped on the back.
The two started rolling east on Coogee Bay Road in Randwick. The particular section of the road they started wheeling through happened to be a bit steep. They quickly picked up speed and were traveling at around 50 miles per hour within seconds. The two had no idea a car was coming west towards them around the bend, at about 37 miles per hour, according to local police.
The cart crashed into the car, with Wahlgren's friend landing on the side of the road, badly injuring his knee, but still alive. Wahlgren shot out of the shopping trolley and landing meters away on a curb. He died at the scene from critical head injuries.
The driver of the car was said to be going the speed limit and passed a breathalyzer test on site. A police investigation into whether drugs or alcohol were involved is currently underway.
